Notes on African Rock Pipit Anthus crenatus biometrics

چکیده
African Rock Pipits Anthus crenatus occur in mountainous terrain with steep slopes, and as a result are not easily captured. This is borne out by the South Bird Ringing Unit (SAFRING) data, which lists fewer than 20 individuals of this species ever having been caught ringed. As this, there also limited biometric data available for species. In paper, I collated from ringed birds (n = 12) well museum study skins housed National Museum, Bloemfontein 22), Durban Natural Science Museum 2) East London 17). Biometric were taken sexes included culmen, tarsus, hind claw, wing tail lengths body mass. Male significantly longer-winged had longer tails females (wing: t 5.239; df 50; P < 0.05; tail: 2.310; 0.05). Mean 86.5 mm males 82.7 females, while 67.0 64.3 females. Hind claw differed between (t -2.227; 29; 0.05), although metric probably biased owing to small female sample size. No significant differences evident culmen tarsus or mass sexes. The only previous that reported morphometrics used much smaller size present study, details represents first detailed dataset based on bird ringing supplementary obtained skins. value specimens obtain again highlighted.

Hybridization and apparent hybridization between meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) and water pipit (A. spinoletta).
Occasionally, even a single breeding event may provide significant biological information, of which the present report of a pairing between a female meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) and a male water pipit (A. spinoletta) may be a good example. Events of mixed-species pairing appear to be relatively common in birds (ARNOLD 1997). However, only rarely has researchers investigated whether such pair...
متن کاملSelection through predation, snowfall and microclimate on nest-site preferences in the Water Pipit Anthus spinoletta
Nest-site characteristics can have a strong impact on reproductive success in birds. Nest sites should simultaneously protect from predators, offer shelter and provide a favourable microclimate. We studied the relationship between three agents of natural selection (predators [i.e. Adders and birds/mammals], snowfall and microclimate), nest-site characteristics and reproductive success to determ...
متن کاملStructure and complexity of perched and flight songs of the tree pipit (Anthus trivialis)
We analysed 2166 songs of 90 males of the tree pipit (Anthus trivialis; Passeriformes: Motacillidae) from five Czech localities to evaluate variation in song characteristics, the song structure and syntax rules, and differences between songs performed in flight and from perches. We measured temporal and spectral song characteristics; structure analysis was based on the identification of individ...

متن کاملMeadow pipit ( Anthus pratensis ) egg appearance in cuckoo ( Cuculus canorus ) sympatric and allopatric populations
Host populations tend to show less ability to discriminate against parasites when living in their absence. However, comparison of rejection rates among sympatric and allopatric host populations does not allow determination of whether the greater tolerance in allopatric populations reflects a genetic change or phenotypic plasticity. Here we test the existence of changes in a host’s adaptation to...
